Before You Show Your Home

The Maids • Jul 30, 2013

If you’re selling your house, your home will see a lot of potential buyers! Before they come in the door, there are some things you can do to help your house give just the right impression.

Start, of course, with a clean house. Visitors to your home want to see it in good condition so they can more easily imagine themselves living in it—if there’s not much time for cleaning on your schedule, hire a maid service to keep it looking welcoming.

Once the house is clean, try these four things that will help sell your house (and for the full list, check out Girl Loves Glam!):

1. De-clutter. When you sell a house, what you really want to sell is space. The best way to do this is to de-clutter your space as much as possible. File papers away, remove odds and ends and big groups of knick knacks to give as much openness as possible.

If your house is full of furniture, you might want to put some of the pieces you don’t need to use right away into storage to show off more floor space. Also, don’t forget to hide any toys!

2. Open doors. Opening the doors gives visitors a good, open impression of the house. Additionally, it makes the full layout easily accessible to anyone considering whether or not to buy it. When they can walk through the house with no hindrance and no surprises, they will feel like they’ve seen the “big picture.”

3. Lights! It’s been shown that potential buyers walk away with a more positive impression of a house when it is well-lit, so before your house is shown to a buyer, turn on all the lights (even closets and bathrooms!) and open all of the curtains.

Light makes a house look fresher, cleaner, and more open, all great qualities for someone buying a house!

4. A Great Smell. Cleaning the house goes a long way in helping it smell great, but you can take extra steps by putting an open box of baking soda in the fridge and in drawers or closets.

You can also sprinkle baking soda onto your carpets, let them sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum it up to remove odors from your carpets. Leave a (unlit if you aren’t going to be home!) scented candle, diffuser, or plug-in if you want—something neutral, light, and clean-smelling is best, don’t go with anything overpowering.

These extra things can help make your house much more appealing to potential buyers!
