How to Reduce Allergens in the Home

The Maids • May 09, 2014

Many of us suffer from a variety of allergies inside the home as well as outdoors. Although many people opt to treat their allergies with anti-histamines, there are a few ways to reduce them without medication.

Furniture- Opt for easy to clean furniture instead of upholstered and ensure that you clean bedding, blankets and curtains frequently. This will get rid of dust particles and dust mites that may be triggering your allergies.

Windows -If you suffer from hay-fever it may be an idea to close your windows during hot weather and use air conditioning instead. Regularly cleaning your windows will also keep the mold peoples that people react to down to a minimum.

Untidiness - Items collect dust, so it's a good idea to remove any unnecessary and unused possessions. Remove items that collect dust such as toys and books, and place them in plastic boxes.

Pets - A common allergy is pet fur or pet saliva. If you are unwilling to get rid of your pets there are things you can do to reduce the allergies triggered, such as frequently washing your pets bedding. If you decide to brush your pet to help with shedding, ensure that you wear a protective allergy mask.

Kitchen- Wash dishes daily to reduce mold growing on unclean plates, wipe down your fridge, get rid of out of date food and ensure that there are no leaks underneath your sink that could cause mold to grow.

Rubbish - Make sure that you put unwanted food and other rubbish in a decent, stable bin, and keep all crumbs off the floor to reduce mold and insect infestation.

Temperature - Keeping the home cool with low humidity will reduce the effects caused by allergies. Ensuring that the air circulates well within the home is also helpful, so keep doors open and conditioning on.
