Defining the Different Styles

The Maids • Apr 27, 2013

When you're reading about interior design, there are a lot of words thrown around to describe different styles. You might have a broad idea of what one or another style looks like, but it's hard to nail down exactly what it is without putting some kind of definition on it.

Since many homeowners who worry about housekeeping also worry about decorating, it's a good idea to take a beginner look at what the different decorating styles actually are.

Contemporary Style is marked by clean lines, but not harsh. Furniture is usually focused on basic shapes and is lower to the ground, and color-wise, it tends to fall to solid neutrals and muted colors broken up by splashes of much bolder colors throughout the room. This might include an accent wall, accessories, or other decorative items spread throughout the space.

As you get more comfortable with the style, you can start using accent colors to tie in other rooms to make your entire home feel unified while still being distinct.

Country Style is both classic and rustic. It combines the familiar, homemade, quintessential country style with classic elements to make a chic but comfortable space. You'll often see whites complemented by florals and soft colors that are contrasted with bright red or pure black accessories.

Handmade and rustic looking items are extremely popular for country style homes, including both furniture like natural wood tables and chairs and accessories like pottery and baskets.

Modern Style is a step beyond contemporary, going more minimal and removing traditional decorating in favor of sleekness. You'll see mostly neutral colors and polished and chrome. Furniture and accessories are likely to make their statements based on the material from which they're made and the geometric and asymmetry of each piece.

What kind of style do you have? Which one of these do you think would appeal to you most?
