Are You Prepared for An Emergency?

The Maids • Dec 19, 2012

The winter months have officially moved in, and with them may come deep snow, blizzards, and ice storms that can knock out power or trap you in your home for a few days. If this happens when you’re unprepared, it can be terrifying, but with just some preparation, you can feel confident that you are ready for any winter storm.

First thing’s first: a messy house in an emergency becomes a serious problem. Getting in and out of a messy house should you need to evacuate or if you need to be rescued can be a hassle and even dangerous. Keeping your house clean through regular housekeeping or maid services is just as important as any other emergency preparation step you take.

With a clean house, put together an emergency kit and keep it in an easy-to-reach location (and one that you will remember!). If you don’t know what should go in your emergency kit, read on for some ideas to get you started.

Basic Emergency Kit Staples

  • First Aid Kit (buy one or make one using this guide)
  • Non-perishable food
  • Bottled water
  • Emergency candles
  • Matches
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Blankets
  • Battery-operated radio
  • List of phone numbers of family, emergency services, and utility companies

It might take a little time to build up your emergency kit, and that’s okay. The sooner you start, though; the better. Don’t forget to check your flashlight and radio to find out what size batteries you need to keep stocked, and check them occasionally to make sure they work.

Being prepared for anything keeps you and your family safe no matter the situation, and knowing you have a plan in place is a big relief when the weather turns bad.
