Quiet Dust Magnet: Cleaning the Blinds

The Maids • Nov 02, 2013

You might or might not realize it, but your window blinds are prone to collecting massive amounts of dust. It stays hidden between the blinds but causes allergy irritation and even discoloration just like dust anywhere else in your home.

Cleaning the blinds might seem like a tedious chore (okay, it sort of is), but if you know the right way to do it, it isn't quite so bad. Plus, once your blinds are clean, if you make a quick dusting part of your regular housekeeping, your blinds will stay cleaner all the time.

Blind Cleaning Methods

Method #1: The Vacuum. You can certainly vacuum your blinds, and this has the distinction of being useable on all types of blinds, although it's a little less effective on wood blinds sometimes.

An important thing to know, though: always vacuum side-to-side across the slats. It might seem less time consuming to do it vertically, but that could cause your blinds to stop closing properly. Broken blinds is definitely not the goal!

Method #2: Moist Dusting. This isn't as effective on fabric blinds, but others should be fine. Your best bet is a mixture of vinegar and water (you can go with pure vinegar, but test it on the material first for color fastness).

Dip a cloth in the vinegar and water mixture, then pass the cloth between the slats, cleaning each one. Make sure you check the cloth and clean off dust as you go.

Method #3: Dry Dusting. This is the best way to clean fabric blinds yourself. If your blinds are exceptionally dirty, your best bet is to take them to a dry cleaner, but if you're just trying to get dust off, this will work.

Your local hardware store likely sells rubber sponges, and this is what you will use to dust the fabric blinds. Remember to remove dust as you go!

Keep dust to a minimum throughout your house with frequent dusting and vacuuming, and if you need some help getting it all done, call in a maid service.
