Making Your Home Feel Like a Beach House

The Maids • Jul 31, 2013

Summer is half over, but if you’re not ready to let go of that feeling just yet, get the housekeeping done, then consider adding some beach décor to your home. How can you do that without going overboard?

The trick is to add a beach feel to your standard elements and to dress them up with small, subtle pieces.

1. Colors. When it comes to paint colors and fabrics, look for colors that remind you of the beach: blues, greens, sandy tans, and white.

Balance them out with each other: if you use a bright color on the walls, use neutrals for your furniture and pop with accessories. Or switch it around: paint the walls white and add an accent wall and brightly colored furniture. As you choose colors, think fresh and light.

2. Fabrics. You will want to choose fabrics that let it light and are breezy and airy. When the sun shines through sheer curtains, the glow it will give your home will feel like you just came in from the beach.

Choose fabrics that are softer in color and, especially for curtains, light material, as well. The idea is to let in as much light as possible to give a feeling of freshness throughout.

3. Décor. This is where a thoughtful, light hand can achieve a lot. It’s tempting to just grab seashells and jars filled with sand and seagulls and fill the room with them, but avoid the temptation.

Instead, choose a few of those elements and add them alongside other items. Add a jar of sand with a candle next to a stack of books, for instance. Tie a rope around a vase and add some fresh flowers on a mantelpiece or end table. Adding beach-type elements subtly alongside other décor will give your home the beach feeling you want without feeling overbearing.

Enjoy the summer décor all year long by adding some beach flair to your design.
