The Maids • Oct 14, 2014

To reduce the amount of dust and dirt that accumulates on books and shelving, bookshelf surfaces should dusted regularly. Organizing a cleaning project and the procedures for cleaning shelves will vary depending upon several factors.

These factors include:

  • the physical condition of the shelves
  • the amount and type of dust and grime to be removed
  • the scope of the cleaning to be undertaken – big or small shelving area

First, you need to decide whether you will be removing all the books to wipe down the shelves or not. If you have been regularly cleaning your shelves, you may be able to opt to only dust the parts that are exposed, not covered by the books. However, if it has been a while since you dusted them, you may want to remove the books so that you can thoroughly wipes the shelves. Use a soft microfiber cloth and a mild cleanser safe for wood to dust and clean shelves. Avoid feather dusters as they only redistribute the dust and are not useful for cleaning shelves or books. Shelves must be dried completely before re-shelving books.

These tips can help you keep your shelves clean and dust free. However, if you would like to leave this work in the hands of professionals, The Maids of Greater Boston, in Newton Massachusetts, offer this service as well as a variety of other maid services.
