Do you really need that rowing machine you purchased four years ago with the intention of rowing every night and losing 40 pounds? While you might "need" the machine, two inches of dust on the rowing seat suggests that it doesn’t get much use.

Not sure if an item is junk or something worth keeping? Go through every item in your garage and ask yourself two questions.

• Have you used the item in the last year?
• Is the item an antique or family heirloom?

If you can't say "yes" to either of these two questions, the item needs to go in the junk pile. Once you've gone through everything in the garage, you should have a much larger "junk" pile than you thought you’d have.

Find it painful to throw away your stuff? Well, would you feel better if you were paid for doing so? One man's junk is another man's treasure. Spend a weekend day holding a garage sale. There are hordes of people who think shopping at garage sales is a great weekend event. Nothing beats someone paying you to haul away your junk.

Of course, not everything is going to sell. So what do you do with the left over items? Throw it in your trash cans. If there is simply too much stuff, you can find services online that will come to your home and haul it away for a reasonable fee.

Is your garage now organized? At this point, you should have plenty of room to store your items up against the wall leaving plenty of room for your car. Imagine that – actually parking your car in the garage!
