Getting Rid of Mold Problems on Baby Items

The Maids • Oct 07, 2014

Mold can cause a lot of problems in a home. Mold can easily grow on your baby’s toys and other baby items, because they like playing in water or putting things in their mouths. This creates moisture on the surface of the items, which is just the right environment for mold. Mold can negatively affect your health, especially for those with breathing conditions, such as asthma. Here are some effective ways for you to deal with mold problems on your baby items:

1. Scrub toys with a gentle cleanser

If you find that your baby’s items have developed mold, the first step that you should take is to scrub the toys with a small scrub brush or old toothbrush using a gentle cleanser. If this does not remove the mold, move on to #2.

2. Soak in bleach solution

A bleach solution will easily kill mold, making sure that the toys are once again safe for your child to play with. Simply mix a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, and allow the toys to soak overnight. After soaking the toys you should rinse them thoroughly and dry them.

3. Replace toys that you cannot clean

If after you soak the toys there is still mold you cannot remove, it may be best to replace them with new ones. While not the most cost effective solutions, it is the safest in the long run. A good idea from this point on would be to weekly soak the toys to disinfect them and prevent the growth of mold.
