Get Rid of Flies the Eco-Friendly Way

The Maids • May 24, 2014

Are flies making merry in your home, while you suffer from the nuisance? Well, using house plants to get rid of flies in your home, would be a good, organic and eco-friendly way. No need of any pesticides, or expensive sprays. Just follow one of the tricks below and your home will be spic and span again.

  • Mint: Mint is a well-known fly-repellent and you can keep potted mint around the doorways, windows or any place where flies enter the house from. Another way to keep flies from sitting on food is to keep crushed mint leaves around the preparation area in the kitchen.
  • Basil: Basil has a strong smell which you might enjoy, but the flies detest. A bowl of crushed leaves must do the trick.
  • Castor: It not only repels flies, but also mosquitoes and wasps. So it’s a useful plant to have in your kitchen garden.
  • Lavender: Very useful in getting rid of flies. Keep fresh sprigs if available, otherwise dried variety must also be effective.
  • Potpourri of dried herbs and spices like eucalyptus, cloves and bay leaves, accentuated with essential oils can be filled into bags and hung in doorways to discourage fly entry into the house. Otherwise, keep them in stacks and put a couple of drops of the oil daily. This will scent up your home in addition to keeping flies away.
  • If you do not have potpourri and want immediate relief from flies, another idea is to use a tablespoon full of lavender oil, mix it with double the quantity of hot water and use a sponge piece to disseminate the aroma, due to which flies will escape from the place. The sponge is reusable; just add a little hot water every day.

These easy steps will help you in keeping flies at bay, while you enjoy a healthy, fly-free life.
